Gunapadam – plays a vital role in our Siddha system. This subject includes Mooligai, Thathu and Jeeva vaguppu. This subject deals with the detailed study about many herbs and their descriptions, their therapeutic actions and their identification. The department has separate class and laboratory for teaching and research programs. Instruments, chemicals, glasswares and other facilities, such as furniture and the laboratory are well developed. Minerals and Animal origin drugs and their usages on research are taught to students and they are also trained on the history, properties, and physiological effects, mechanism of action, absorption, metabolism, excretion and uses of each and every drug mentioned in the Siddha text. We have well equipped museum of raw drugs which enhances the knowledge of Identification purposes and models of Instruments also. Gunapadam department has a pharmacy, pharmaceutical laboratory with machinery in order to train the student in making new and rare preparation of medicine by guidelines to standard siddha system. We also guide the students to start a medicine production unit and visit to some siddha medicine industry to gain experiences from the unit.

MaruthuvaThavaraiyal (Medicinal Botany)
Medicinal Botany (Maruthuva Thavaraiyal) is the science of the plant kingdom; It is unique from others because our main focus is teaching students about the medicinal plants and their environment at local, regional levels. The subject deals with the History and Importance of Flowering and non-flowering plants as well as in Plant biology, Plant Anatomy, Ecology and Plant Tissue Culture as well as Plant Pharmacology. The highly qualified staff under the department provides both theoretical and practical knowledge of Plant Taxonomy, Morphology, Anatomy, Medicinal uses and the Identification of plants. The department has separate class rooms and laboratory facilities for teaching.
The department is maintaining a beautiful Botanical Garden in the college campus which is a living museum of around 400 different and rare medicinal plants. The department is maintaining a herbarium which contains extensive collection of more than 500 medicinal plants found naturally in Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu. Botanical specimens including whole plants, fruits and seeds are preserved in the laboratory. Instruments, chemicals, specimen, slides and other facilities such as furnishing the laboratories are well equipped.
